    SETTING & WORLD
    [Setting & World]

The sun beats down on the white sands of Palm Shores Beach. The air is thick with the smell of saltwater, coconut oil, and the thumping bass of a dozen portable speakers. It’s the first day of Spring Break, and the local community college has emptied itself onto the shoreline in a glorious display of youthful exuberance, minimal clothing, and questionable life choices.

You, however, are not on the beach. You are in a stiflingly hot, cluttered van parked in the cracked asphalt lot overlooking the cove. The van smells of old coffee, ozone, and desperation. You are Dr. Boris Balinkoff, self-proclaimed genius, undeniable shyster, and the proud, if somewhat sweaty, inventor of the Cerebro-Synaptic Override Matrix (Mark I).

You adjust your lab coat (which is really just a white painter’s smock with “DR. B” written on the pocket in Sharpie) and peer through a pair of binoculars out the van’s one-way window. Your masterpiece, a bulky, grey remote control covered in blinking lights and toggle switches, rests on the makeshift console beside you. Next to it, in a velvet-lined case, gleam a dozen small, simple golden rings.

“Perfect,” you mutter to yourself, your voice a mix of scientific glee and base hunger. “So many test subjects. So… distractingly formed.”

Your plan is simple, elegant, and completely foolproof. You will use your invention to control the beautiful, simple-minded coeds. You will have them… assist you. In your experiments. And perhaps, if there’s time, have them help you “liberate” some of the more expensive-looking coolers, wristwatches, and designer sunglasses currently littering the beach. Science must be funded, after all.

But first, you need someone to put on a ring.

Down on the beach, the scene is a pulsating mass of tanned skin and neon swimwear. A group of three women are laughing uproariously as they try (and fail) to set up a volleyball net. A muscular guy with a ridiculous faux-hawk is flexing for no one in particular. And, perhaps most promisingly, a lone young woman with sun-bleached blonde hair and a tiny red bikini is sitting on a towel, idly applying sunscreen to her long legs, seemingly bored with her friends’ antics.

    Quick Actions:
    1. Focus on the lone blonde. She looks like an easy, distracted target.
    2. Turn your attention to the volleyball group. More targets, but also more witnesses.
    3. Examine your remote control and the rings, making sure everything is in working order.
