  • The storm finally eased before dawn, thinning into a fine, persistent drizzle.

    The vehicle left the muddy forest track and entered an abandoned parish ringed by ancient oaks. Ahead stood an old stone church, its spire silent and heavy in the gray morning light. Most of the stained glass was broken; only a few panes still held faded remnants of the Virgin and the saints. The iron gate at the entrance hung half-open, its chain rusted—like a wound time had forgotten.

    “We’re here,” Liora said quietly, parking beside a vine-covered entrance on the church’s flank. “The basement access is on the east side. The shielding field is already active—more stable than the last place.”

    Elias was first out. He pulled open a heavy wooden door hidden behind the stone wall. Beyond it, stone steps descended into a mix of old candle wax, damp masonry, and the faint scent of frankincense. He glanced back at those still in the car. “Quickly. Get her settled before the rain stops.”

    Grace helped Cassandra out with careful hands. Cassandra’s legs were still unsteady. The residual pulse inside her had been greatly weakened by the storm and the journey, yet it lingered like a thin heat-haze coiled around her lower abdomen and chest. She leaned against Grace; the silver cross pressed cool and real against her collarbone.

    Just as the four of them prepared to enter the stairwell, the sound of another engine rose behind them.

    A black sedan glided to a silent stop behind their vehicle. Its headlights cut two pale columns through the drizzle. The door opened. A tall, upright figure stepped out.

    Damian Thorne.

    He still wore the charcoal-gray wool overcoat, collar buttoned to the top. Rain had lightly dampened his black hair, yet it remained perfectly ordered. His gray eyes were calm to the point of transparency in the morning light; his gaze went straight to Cassandra.

    He did not hurry. He simply walked forward at a measured pace.

    “Professor Thorne!” Grace cried out, immediately shielding Cassandra behind her, voice tight with alarm. “What do you think you’re doing?!”

    At the same moment Liora stepped sideways to block the path, her left hand already near the defensive tool at her waist, eyes sharp. “Whoever you are, this is not a place you should be.”

    Damian merely angled his body slightly, the motion light as dodging a breath of wind. Grace’s outstretched …
