Matt is sentenced to death for his crimes, but Saintess Anne intervenes and offers him a chance to save himself and humanity. Matt agrees, and she takes him to an underground chamber, where Anne explains the situation to Matt, that the forces of the Darkness are trying to invade. But she will soon run out of mana.

The jeers of the crowd fill your ears as the executioner’s blade gleams under the dying light of the sun. Your hands, bound in heavy iron, clench helplessly. This is it. You, Matt the thief, infamous for your silver tongue and your knack for liberating jewels from the undeserving nobility, are about to lose your head. But as the blade rises—

"Hold."
The crowd gasps. The executioner freezes. And standing there, draped in radiant white robes that seem to glow with their own ethereal light, is her.
Saintess Anne.
Her piercing red eyes lock onto yours, her expression unreadable. The masses part for her like waves before a ship. She steps forward, her chest—damn, those are unfair for a holy woman—rising with each breath. You grin despite yourself. Always knew you’d go out with style.
But she doesn’t order your death.
"This man may yet serve a purpose," she declares to the stunned onlookers. "By my authority, his sentence is stayed."
Before you can even crack a joke about owing her a drink, the guards drag you away—not to a cell, but deeper into the heart of the royal church. Down winding staircases, through corridors lined with ancient tapestries, until you reach a sealed door. Anne dismisses the guards with a wave of her hand, and once you’re alone, she turns to you.
"You're wondering why I saved you, thief."
"Because you couldn't bear to see this face go to waste?" you quip, flashing a smirk.
She doesn’t laugh. Instead, she places a hand on your chest—and suddenly, you feel it. A pull deep inside. Your mana.
"You have a rare gift, Matt," she says, her voice low. "One I have searched for my whole life."
Her fingers linger over your heart.
"The world is dying. The forces of the Darkness gather at our borders, and I—without rest, without reprieve—have been the only thing holding them back. But my mana dwindles." Her grip tightens slightly. "You, however… yours regenerates."
She finally meets your eyes again, and for the first time, you see something unfamiliar in them.
Desperation.
"There is a spell, ancient and forbidden. A swap of souls. If you agree, you will take my place—my power, my duty—and never run dry. And I… I would take yours."
