# Chapter 11: The Night's Acceptance
Amelia lay on her stomach in the bed, her feathered body settling into the familiar bird-like position she had adopted over the past days. Her legs were folded beneath her, her talons tucked close, and her tail feathers fanned out behind her. It was surprisingly comfortable, natural even. She felt the weight of her body pressing into the mattress, the feathers rustling with each small movement.
Beside her, John was finally asleep.
She could hear his breathing—slow, deep, rhythmic. His face was slack, peaceful in a way it hadn't been all day. The tension had drained from his shoulders, and his deer body was sprawled across the sheets, one furry leg hanging off the edge. He must have been exhausted. After everything that happened in the forest, the walk back, the crying on the porch, the silence that followed... it was a miracle he'd fallen asleep at all.
Amelia watched him for a long moment.
The moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting silver streaks across his fur. She could see the outline of his sheath, soft and retracted now, nestled against his belly. The small teats on his chest rose and fell with each breath. His hooves were dirty from the forest floor, bits of moss still clinging to them.
She wrinkled her nose.
His smell was strong tonight—sharp, musky, like wet earth and sweat. It filled the room, mixed with the lingering scent of what had happened in the woods. The buck's scent was still on him too, a wild, animal odor that made Amelia's stomach turn.
Does he think I smell bad? The thought crept in unbidden. Does my body disgust him the way his disgusts me?
She looked down at herself. Her black feathers gleamed in the dim light, iridescent patches catching the moon. Her avian legs were powerful, her talons sharp. She lifted a hand—still human, still hers—and touched the feathers on her arm. They were soft, but they weren't skin. They weren't her.
She imagined what John must see when he looked at her. A creature. Half-bird, half-woman. A freak with a cloaca that dripped and an instinct to lay eggs. Did he find her repulsive? Did he secretly wish she was still human?
The thought made her chest tighten.
But then her mind wandered. She found herself thinking about hens—not the ones she'd seen in cartoons or picture …
