  • # Chapter 14: The Promise

The debriefing took place in a nondescript government building on the outskirts of Raccoon City. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead. Coffee cups sat half-empty on a conference table. Chris sat in a stiff chair, still wearing Claire's clothes—the red vest, the black shirt, the miniskirt—all of it wrinkled and stained with smoke and blood.

He'd managed to salvage a new wig from Jill's emergency kit. It wasn't as good as the original, but it would do.

Claire wouldn't complain about a little imperfection.

The STARS command had asked questions. Formal ones. What had happened in the mansion? How had the fire started? Where was Albert Wesker?

Chris had stuck to the story he'd rehearsed with Jill. An engineer trapped in the mansion. The outbreak. The monsters. The explosion. He'd kept his answers simple, vague, and let Jill fill in the gaps.

"I meant what I said in there," she said quietly. "I will identify you as Claire until you're ready to reveal your disguise publicly. I gave you my word."

"I know." Chris rubbed the back of his neck. "I... I appreciate that. More than you know."

"Any idea how long you'll keep it up?"

Chris looked down at his hands. The hands that had held Claire's as she died. The hands that had fired a pistol at a Tyrant. The hands that had pocketed the evidence she'd died for.

"I have to disguise myself as Claire until the whole Umbrella Corporation is gone," he said. "Not just Raccoon City. Everywhere. Every lab. Every facility. Every shell company. Until there's nothing left."

Jill nodded slowly. "That's a big promise."

"Claire made a bigger one." Chris met her eyes. "She gave her life for this. I …
