  • # Chapter 16: The Final

Amelia lay curled in the corner of the coop, the straw and droppings matted against her feathers. Her body was heavy, satisfied, empty. The rooster had strutted away to join the hens, and the coop had fallen quiet. She didn't have the strength to move. She didn't want to.

The world blurred at the edges. Her eyes fluttered closed.

    She slept.

    ---

A voice cut through the darkness.

    "Amelia? Amelia!"

She stirred, blinking. Dim light filtered through the slits in the coop walls. How long had she been asleep? An hour? Two?

    "Amelia, where are you?"

    John.

She heard footsteps in the yard outside, then the creak of the coop door. Light flooded in as the door swung open. John's silhouette filled the frame, his human legs and torso outlined against the morning sun.

She felt her cheeks burn beneath the feathers.

But she also felt something else. Certainty. The scroll had said "share a bed with one unaffected." She had shared a coop with a rooster. She had mated. The transformation would break. By morning, she would be human again.

    It's almost over.

She pushed herself up onto her knees, wincing. Her muscles ached. Her cloaca throbbed, still sensitive, still wet.

"I'm okay," she said, her voice hoarse. "I did it. I found the rooster. It worked... I think. Tomorrow I'll be—"

She tried to stand. Her talons slipped in the straw, and she braced herself against a nesting box. But as she straightened, a sharp cramp twisted in her lower belly.

    She gasped.

    "Amelia?" John stepped forward.

"Wait." She held up a hand. "I know this feeling."

She knew it intimately. The deep, familiar pressure. The way her body shifted, preparing. The urge that was both painful and inevitable.

    She needed to …
