# Chapter Ten: Everything We Were Before
It was a Tuesday night, three days after the theatre, and we were both lying in our separate rooms doing the thing we now did every night, which was talk until one of us fell asleep mid-sentence.
The kissing had changed the temperature of everything. Not the messages themselves — those were the same, filthy and warm by turns — but the knowing. Now when she said i want u, there was a mouth attached to it. Now when I said come here, we both knew what it would feel like.
We'd spent two nights on pure fantasy. The 47 kisses, the wall, the candy, the mangoes. By Tuesday we'd run out of new ways to say I want you and started circling something else instead — the thing you only get to once the wanting is settled.

Me: Two years of that. Just talking, hanging out, that slow thing. Then I asked her out properly and she said yes before I finished the sentence.

Sneha: so four years. from college into work?
Me: Yeah. She started working first, I joined a year later. That's when we actually had money for the first time. We spent it all on each other. Trips, dinners, weekends.
