# Chapter 6: Beta
Friday night started at nine, and by nine-fifteen I already knew this one was different.
Her replies came slower than usual. Not the busy-slow I'd learned to read over the last two weeks — not the I'm in the middle of something slow. This was a different kind. There was a heat underneath every message, like she was typing with one eye on the door and one eye on the phone, checking over her shoulder before she answered.
Sneha: ok. so. saturday.
Sneha: what are we actually doing. i need to know so i can make excuses at home
Me: Excuses?
Sneha: my parents are here for the week. i have to tell them where im going and when im back.
Sneha: so if ur plan is bad, im not going 😌
Me: Fair. What's already booked?
Sneha: morning temple with mummy. that's non-negotiable, shes been talking about it for a week.
Sneha: lunch at home with the whole family. cousins coming. the usual circus.
Sneha: evening out with the girls. they've booked someplace, they wont tell me where.
Sneha: so...
Me: So I have the afternoon.
Sneha: u have the afternoon 😂
Sneha: between temple and cake. good luck.
Me: I'll take it. Meet me at 3:30. The mall near your place, the one with the coffee place on the ground floor.
Sneha: that one is 10 min from mine. how do u know that.
Me: You mentioned it once. You were complaining about parking.
Sneha: 🙄
Sneha: fine. 3:30. i can be home by 6 and nobody will ask anything.
Me: Perfect.
Sneha: and vickey
Me: Yeah?
Sneha: dont be late. i hate waiting.
Me: I told you. You don't get to hate waiting. You like it.
Sneha: 😤
Sneha: shut up
And that was the tone of the night. Everything she sent had an edge to it, a push-back that felt like a pull. She wasn't just flirting anymore. She was leaning in.
At eleven, we were still going, and I'd stopped pretending I wasn't watching the clock. At eleven-fifty-five, I made the decision.
I called her.
She disconnected it. Four seconds later, the message came through.
Sneha: why are u calling
Sneha: im at home, my parents are in the next room 😭
Me: I know.
Me: That's why I'm calling.
Me: I want to be the first one to wish you. …
